In a healthy person, sinuses are empty pockets in the front of the skull that are lined with a soft, pink tissue called mucosa. When your sinuses become inflamed, fluids build up in the pockets and germs start to grow. This is a sinus infection (aka sinusitis). Viruses are most likely to cause sinusitis but other factors include allergies, a weakened immune system, smoking, and structural problems in the sinuses such as nasal polyps. Symptoms of sinusitis are commonly congestion, runny nose, facial pain or pressure, headache, post-nasal drip, sore throat, and cough.
